How to Prepare for a Newborn Photo Session at Home
Start by asking your photographer which rooms they expect to use. A bedroom or living room with a reasonably clear area near a window is often sufficient. You can send a few quick phone pictures beforehand so the photographer can assess the available light. Focus your preparation on those spaces rather than cleaning the whole house.
Set out one or two clothing options for each person being photographed. Plain fabrics and comfortable fits usually keep attention on faces, while large lettering can draw the eye away. Babies can wear a simple, well-fitting outfit; elaborate accessories are not necessary. Keep a spare available in case of a spill or nappy change.
Keep your usual feeding supplies, clean nappies, wipes, and a cloth within easy reach. Follow your baby's feeding cues rather than delaying a feed for the photographs. There is no need to keep a newborn awake beforehand to try to guarantee sleep during the session.
Decide who you would like included, but leave the order flexible. Young siblings may do best with a few brief photographs before taking a break with another adult. Parents can sit comfortably and hold the baby while the photographer adjusts the framing. Never leave a baby unattended on a bed, cushion, or other raised surface.
Expect some of the visit to involve no photography at all. Feeding, changing, and comforting are ordinary parts of a newborn session. If your baby remains unsettled, pause and discuss whether to simplify or reschedule. A shorter set of comfortable, safely made photographs is preferable to continuing when your family needs rest.
